Description: This is a set of 23 questions to guide viewers through the movie The 13th by Ava DuVernay. It is followed by two prayers from Kenji Kuramitsu’s A Booklet of Uncommon Prayer, 2017.

Purpose & Notes: This exquisite documentary moves quickly and covers a thorough amount of information. These guiding questions were designed to help students keep track of the topics being covered and take notes. It is appropriate to pause the film when needed to jot down responses. The prayers at the end are encouraged to move the experience of watching the film from an intellectual realm to a realm of holding lament, a desire for justice, and faith together.
